“This took place in the Palaung Village of Pankam, in northern Myanmar. We walked around 18km uphill to get there from the town of Hsipaw – a walk so peaceful that sometimes you barely notice the heat! We stayed overnight in the leader of the village’s house – a 35 year old who has been voted in to the position (almost against his will) for the past 5 years. The day after we were there, he had to chair a meeting of 200 people who were coming in from the surrounding area in order to discuss the current fighting between the Shan and Palaung rebels. This responsibility on the shoulders of a guy just two years older than me really made me stop and think!
His house was next to the monastery in the photo and, after observing the novice monks surprisingly smoking cigarettes and flirting with local girls, a few of them came over to chat with us.
This was a great experience in itself and we definitely left Pankam with some lasting memories – including a very different view of monks!” – Adam
